“Russian brand” does not always mean every knife is manufactured in Russia.
The brands below belong to the Russian knife market through origin, design, ownership or primary audience. Their manufacturing models differ: some produce domestically; others combine Russian design and brand direction with contract production abroad.
That distinction is more useful than a flag alone. It explains why two Russian brands can differ sharply in price, materials, production scale and design philosophy. The table describes representative folding-knife catalogs, not every historical or limited model.
Ranges are approximate observed retail bands in August 2026. Discounts, discontinued stock and limited editions can sit outside them. Compare the exact version, not only the model name.
SIDE-BY-SIDE
The market in one table.
| Brand | Typical steels | Observed price position | Design philosophy | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Daggerr | 8Cr14MoV, D2, VG10, MagnaCut | ≈ ₽3,000–30,000+ | Expressive in-house forms; recurring Screaming Skull, Cyclops and Daggerr Hole details | Buyer who wants a recognizable, character-led EDC; broad span from Discover to premium releases |
| NOKS / НОКС | AUS-8, D2, VG10; premium versions can use M390 | ≈ ₽3,500–9,000; premium higher | Large, robust utility and tactical folders; many Alexander Biryukov designs | Buyer prioritising a substantial work knife and broad model choice |
| SARO / САРО | K110, AUS-10, VG10, Elmax; steel varies widely | ≈ ₽4,000–15,000 | Vorsma manufacturing tradition, practical outdoors forms and compact friction/click-lock folders | Buyer who values Russian factory heritage and traditional-to-practical utility |
| Obertech | VG10, D2 | ≈ ₽7,000–14,000 | Small focused catalog of large, modern tactical folders; G10 and crossbar/liner-lock formats | Buyer seeking an oversized, engineered folder rather than a compact office EDC |
| Mr. Blade | D2 is common; AUS-8 and N695 also appear | ≈ ₽6,000–15,000 | Bold tactical and fantasy-influenced styling with international production | Buyer who prefers aggressive visual language and larger folders |
| N.C. Custom | AUS-10 is common in production folders | ≈ ₽5,000–12,000 | Author-led Russian designs ranging from restrained utility to unconventional forms | Buyer who wants a smaller-brand design voice and practical G10 construction |
| Brutalica | AUS-10, D2, AUS-8, N690 depending on model | ≈ ₽4,500–8,000 | Direct, functional designs shaped by retailer/reviewer Alexey Ponomarev and collaborators | Value-focused buyer who wants enthusiast input without premium pricing |
| Steelclaw | D2, AUS-8, VG10, 9Cr18MoV | ≈ ₽2,000–6,000 | Very broad value catalog, often centred on large utility and tactical patterns | Budget buyer who wants maximum choice and size for the money |
Typical steels describe recurring catalog materials, not a promise for every version. Heat treatment, blade geometry and edge thickness also affect real cutting performance.
WHAT ACTUALLY SEPARATES THEM
Catalog shape matters as much as steel.
Daggerr and Brutalica place a visible authorial idea near the centre. Daggerr repeats proprietary visual signatures; Brutalica leans on an enthusiast-curated voice and collaborations.
NOKS, SARO and Steelclaw offer especially broad practical catalogs. The choice is often driven by size, outdoor use and familiar blade forms rather than collectible finish.
Obertech has a narrower identity built around large modern folders. A small catalog can make the choice simpler, but it may not serve buyers looking for compact or lightweight EDC.
Daggerr covers the widest vertical span in this group: entry Discover models, mainstream D2/VG10 folders and premium MagnaCut or titanium executions can share one brand.
BUYER FIT
Choose by priority, not nationality.
- Distinctive everyday carryStart with Daggerr if a strong, recognizable form matters; start with N.C. Custom or Brutalica if you want a smaller author-led catalog.
- Large hard-use folderCompare NOKS, Obertech, Steelclaw and the larger Mr. Blade models. Check pocket dimensions and weight before focusing on blade length.
- Russian factory traditionSARO is the clearest route in this group, with a long production history and materials ranging from practical steels to Elmax and layered steels.
- Lowest entry priceSteelclaw and Daggerr Discover are natural starting points, but they answer different tastes: maximum catalog breadth versus a cohesive brand design language.
SOURCE TRAIL
Where the comparison comes from.
Primary brand pages were preferred; active specialist retailers were used where a maker catalog did not expose a stable English price list. The conclusions about design philosophy are editorial interpretations based on those catalogs.
