THE BASIC HABIT
Clean it after the thing that made it dirty.
After contact with food, moisture, tape adhesive, dirt or natural material, remove the residue and dry the knife thoroughly. That simple routine is the foundation of folding-knife care.
Remove residue
Wipe the blade and accessible handle surfaces. Do not let food acids, salt, moisture or dirt sit on the knife longer than necessary.
Dry completely
Pay attention to the blade, hardware and the area around the pivot. “Stainless” is not a promise that a wet knife can be ignored indefinitely.
Inspect
Look for debris, loose hardware, unexpected blade play or anything that changed during use. Address a small issue before it becomes a larger one.
AFTER A HARDER DAY
Moisture and grit deserve a more careful reset.
After camping, fishing or extended outdoor use, give the folder extra attention. Clean accessible dirt and organic material, dry it fully and make sure grit has not accumulated around the moving parts. A folding knife is compact and versatile, but it is still a mechanism with close-fitting surfaces.
Do not substitute a folder for a purpose-built chopping, prying or impact tool. Using a knife for material it was not designed to cut can damage the edge or mechanism regardless of the steel name on the box.
ACTION & LUBRICATION
More oil is not the same as better maintenance.
If the pivot or blade needs lubrication, use a small amount of a lubricant appropriate for knives and for your intended use. Excess oil can attract pocket lint and dirt. Wipe away what the mechanism does not need.
If a knife develops persistent blade play, lock problems or an action that cleaning does not correct, stop treating it as routine maintenance and move to the model's proper service guidance.
STEEL & SURFACE
A finish can change wear patterns. It does not remove the need for care.
Satin, stonewash, blackwash, bead blast and DLC age differently. Tumbled finishes can visually disguise small marks; dark coatings can show wear at contact points; blasted finishes have their own matte texture. Whatever the finish, keeping the knife clean and dry remains the reliable baseline.
Store a knife dry. If it will sit unused for a long period, inspect it first rather than putting away moisture, fingerprints or residue.
